چکیده

The dipole vortex solutions of the Hasegawa-Mima drift wave or equivalently, thequasi-geostrophic Rossby wave equation are shown to be split up into long-lived monopole vortices (cyclones and anticyclones) in the presence of a small scalar, i.e. KdV type, nonlinearity. The lifetime of the dipole vortex varies inversely with the strength of the scalar nonlinearity.

Self-trapping of two-dimensional vector dipole solitons in nonlocal media

We study the self-trapping of the superposition of two-dimensional vector dipole solitons in nonlocal media with an arbitrary degree of nonlocality. We apply the variational approach to find the exact solution of such vector dipole solitons and investigate their stability by using directly numerical simulations. The dynamics of such vector solitons are also compared with a scalar vortex. We sho...

A point particle approximation to the classical dynamics of well separated vortices of the abelian Higgs model is developed. A static vortex is asymptotically identical to a solution of the linearized field theory (a Klein-Gordon/Proca theory) in the presence of a singular point source at the vortex centre. It is shown that this source is a composite scalar monopole and magnetic dipole, and the...

A Note on Free Vibration of a Double-beam System with Nonlinear Elastic Inner Layer

In this note, small amplitude free vibration of a double-beam system in presence of inner layer nonlinearity is investigated. The nonlinearity is due to inner layer material and is not related to large amplitude vibration. At first, frequencies of a double-beam system with linear inner layer are studied and categorized as synchronous and asynchronous frequencies. It is revealed that the inner l...

Self-trapping of light in a two-dimensional photonic lattice

We study wave propagation in a two-dimensional photonic lattice with focusing Kerr nonlinearity, and report on the existence of various nonlinear localized structures in the form of fundamental, dipole, and vortex solitons. First, the linear bandgap structure induced by the two-dimensional photonic crystal is determined, and solitons are found to exist in the photonic bandgap. Next, structures ...

The velocity-scalar cross spectrum of stretched spiral vortices

The stretched-spiral vortex model is used to calculate the velocity-scalar cross spectrum for homogeneous, isotropic turbulence in the presence of a mean scalar gradient. The only nonzero component of the cospectrum is that contributed by the velocity component in the direction of the imposed scalar gradient while the quadrature spectrum is identically zero, in agreement with experiment. For th...
